At the Prestigious Red Mountain Ranch

Crested Butte Colorado is the last undiscovered ski resort town in North America, truly a diamond in the rough.
Crested Butte Mountain Resort has recently been purchased and construction has begun on a new $200+ million base village; sure to send area property values through the roof.
Castlewood Estate is an enchanting, architecturally detailed Log and Stone Masterpiece that encompasses nearly 20,000 square feet* of the utmost rustic luxury. Castlewood was designed and built with the theme of a century old hunting lodge, but with all the modern conveniences and technology of today. Situated on Crested Butte's most spectacular 35 acre view lot rising above 10,000 feet in elevation, thus providing world class mountain views second to none. 2 weeks were spent simply staking the entire foot print of the home until each and every window had the best view that was logistically possible.
Stonework:
Old World stone masons were hired to perform the “Dry Stack” masonry you see through-out the estate; which alone took over 2 years to complete. Each rock was carefully selected and meticulously hand chiseled to fit the rocks next to it. The dry stack method is structurally modified with steel rebar and concrete but is visually identical to the method utilized centuries ago. True dry stack masonry work should not allow the appearance of cement, i.e. no grout lines, and should also have massive stones on the bottom then slightly smaller stones continuing up. Builders rarely use this method as there is no logistical way to move these massive boulders with cranes inside most homes. Not the case here, boulders weighing over 6,000 pounds apiece were moved about the home via a custom made primitive cart, pushed by a dozen or so of our hard working friends from south of the border. These craftsmen would spend days chiseling away on one massive stone until the stone fit perfectly. The stone arches you see are true arches, built like the old European bridges of yesteryear with Keystones and Shoulder Stones so that the more weight that is applied to the top, the tighter the arch becomes.
Kitchen:
The gourmet kitchen is rustic yet sophisticated. The range is a LaCanche that was flown in from the manufacturer in France. The 2 refrigerators are twin Sub Zeros completely enclosed in a knotty alder cabinet. The 4 dishwashers are Fisher Paykel; all with custom made matching knotty alder cabinet fronts. The granite countertops are all hand-carved with thick rope type edging. Complimenting sinks could not be found, so they were hand-crafted out of matching granite slabs. The cabinetry is distressed knotty alder that has been painstakingly distressed to appear 100 years old.
Telephone Room:
This is a very refined room with only a chair and an old time telephone, but it has a lot of detail. The coffered ceiling and paneled walls are all knotty alder with 32 coats of a hand rubbed wax/oil finish. A 2 inch thick slice of granite that matches the granite countertop has been inlaid into the baseboard to add to the finish.
Foyer:
The Foyer alone consists of many tons of rock to give it a very castle-like feeling. This is complimented by the gargoyle accent pieces and light fixtures imported from Europe.
Wet Bar:
The Bar countertop is semi-transparent Onyx Marble with lights underneath that causes the Onyx to literally glow, with a matching Onyx sink that is lit as well. The bar refrigerators are twin Sub-Zero drawers with matching knotty alder cabinet fronts, as does the ice machine. The cabinetry is knotty alder that has been hand carved to look as though a grizzly bear has clawed the doors. There are horse hoof prints stamped into the floor.
Master Suite:
The Master Suite contains a Sitting Room, Breakfast Nook, Covered Deck, Bedroom, His and Her Baths, His and Her Walk-in Closets, His and Her Water Closets, a Double Shower with a Granite Fossil Waterfall and a Kitchenette. A unique roof design that consists of a massive roof that covers the 3 smaller interior roofs, allows rain and snow to shed properly. There are 3 rock fireplaces in the Master Suite alone.
Guest Suites:
The 2 Guest Suites are similar to master suites in most high end homes. Each has their own massive rock fireplace, large bedroom with 20’ ceilings encompassing log truss work, French patio doors leading out onto private covered stone patios, private baths with marble counter tops and sinks, jetted tubs, marble showers, built-in dressers and walk-in closets.

Stone Floors:
Stone floors compliment the rock and log walls. The 2-3 inch thick stone floors were hand chiseled to fit and placed on a 3" thick bed of concrete. This bed of concrete has thousands of feet of PEX tubing in which 2 huge boilers pump hot water through to heat the home. A manifold system enables the occupant to simply yet precisely control the temperature of each individual room.
Wood Floors:
The wood floors are again made to fit in with the old hunting lodge theme of the home. The Great Room has rough sawn wide plank Eastern White Pine flooring. If you look closely at several of the wood floors you will see where horse shoe imprints have been hammered into the flooring to appear as if a horse has walked through the room and out through the patio doors.
The 2 Guest Suites on the Main Level of the home have flooring that was cut from old barn beams dating back to the 1800s. There are horse shoe imprints in these rooms as well. Look closely to the nails that were used to fasten the flooring down; they are hand cut square head nails commonly found in homes of the 1800s. If you step and notice a squeak, this was intentional; a predrilled hole with a ground nail carefully inserted and glued to only the flooring to allow it to move it and out of the drilled hole in the sub-floor and squeak just like an old hunting lodge floor would.
The formal Dining Room has a Wormy American Chestnut floor; a wood that has been extinct since the early 1900s. This wood is only available from reclaiming it through pre turn of the century buildings.
The Loft and Master Suite have Reclaimed Oak floors from the 1800s. Old Oak beams from the first buildings built on the east coast of America were sawn-down into flooring.
The Baseboard throughout the home is a 7 piece design that has been distressed to match the doors and cabinetry; a band of copper has been inlaid into the wood of the baseboard to naturally patina with time.
Log Work:
The log structure was built in Montana over a 1 year period with dead standing Engleman Spruce Logs. Each log was handcrafted to fit to the log adjoining it. Every log was then numbered, the structure taken back apart and loaded unto 20 semi trucks to be delivered to Crested Butte. The log re-stacking process started in December, so each semi load of logs had to be dragged 4 miles up the mountain by heavy earth moving equipment over the snow covered mountain road. Each log was then restacked and fastened together with steel rebar and huge lag bolts. Once the logs were stacked, every joint between the logs was sealed with expanding foam, insulating foam, chinked with a synthetic caulking material, then stained and sealed. The home has been “detailed to death”, along with no expense sparred for this expansive home to have a cozy cabin feel.
Roof:
A team of roofers spent 6 months just applying the cedar shingles. If you look closely you will see that every 5th course of shingles has a doubled-up layer to add dimension to the large roof. All of the valleys, drip edges, flashings on 7 chimneys, etc are all copper. On all the ridges of the roof a Boston Box Ridge Vent is evident, (a stepped up small little roof that runs the length on the ridges). Back during the turn of the century this was a common type of venting for a roof.
Electrical System:
The lighting design was done by an Aspen, CO firm known for designing the lighting in some of the most elaborate homes in the country. The electrical system is a Lite Touch computerized system that can be remotely computer controlled from anywhere in the world. Each keypad has only a CAT5 computer wire running to it which in turn connects to the computer modules in the mechanical room on the lower level of the home. This is a very simple, trouble free system yet the most technologically advanced system available today.
Plumbing:
The water well for the home is drilled over 500 feet deep with very pure water. A hot water recirculation pump insures that hot water is only seconds away from any faucet in the home. The plumbing fixtures are all old world oil rubbed bronze Herbeau fixtures imported from France. The Marble showers all have an array of body sprays with temperature control valves. Countertops are all hand crafted Marble and Granite with matching hand crafted Marble and Granite sinks.
Fireplaces:
Nearly every room has a fireplace, just as an old hunting lodge would before the early days of central heating systems. Each of the 8 fireplace’s stonework is a slightly different design of dry-stack masonry, as are the hand crafted old world fireplace doors.
Widows:
The windows and patio doors are energy efficient Copper-Clad Pozzi with French mullions. The mullions were hand carved and sanded onsite by two wood carvers so they appear as though they are 100 years old.
Doors:
The front door is an arched hand-carved distressed knotty alder door with speak easy doors, steel grates and pistols. The interior doors are arched knotty alder that have been distressed to appear 100 years old. The matching knotty alder door casings have been distressed in the same fashion; to look as though they have a century's worth of wear on them.
Porches / Patios:
There is an abundance of Porches and Patios that literally surround the home, all with stone surfaces, rock columns and log railings. The main Patio area is highlighted by the Barbeque area complete with a Viking gas grill, 4 refrigerators and wet bar.
